After years of extensive research and preparation, The Ontario Acupuncture Examination Committee (OAEC) has implemented its acupuncture certification program since 1999. This program was designed to promote recognized standards of competency and safety in acupuncture practice.
In the past decades, due to the lack of acupuncture regulations in Ontario and many provinces in Canada, the qualification of acupuncture practitioners, the credibility of acupuncture and the safety of the public have been major concerns. The purpose of this examination and certification program is to maximize the safety of the public; to assist patients in obtaining safe and competent treatment in acupuncture; to encourage the establishment of minimal acceptable educational standards for qualified practice of acupuncture in Ontario and Canada. This program aims to establish a professional model for acupuncturists in Ontario and to provide a framework for the helping Government regulatory process.
